The Women Changing How We Think About Finance

At Beau Co, we’re proud to spotlight women who are changing the way business is done, those who combine expertise with empathy and turn complex subjects into something accessible and inspiring. Few do that better than Abby Webb, co-founder of Her Accountants, a modern firm built to empower female entrepreneurs through clarity, strategy, and confidence.

Together with her business partner, Lucy Hughes, Abby is on a mission to make finance feel less intimidating and far more empowering. What began as a shared vision between two friends has become a movement encouraging women to take control of their financial future.

Where It All Began

Abby and Lucy’s story began more than sixteen years ago, when the two first met in Abby’s very first accountancy role. Their friendship, and shared passion for supporting others, would one day become the foundation of their business.

After years of working in separate firms, with Abby eventually owning the practice where they first met, their paths converged again. When Abby sold her firm in 2023 and took some time off to focus on her family, she realised she wasn’t done building something of her own. “I knew that together, Lucy and I could create something special, and that’s how Her Accountants was born.”

Both had noticed a recurring theme throughout their careers: so many brilliant women felt overwhelmed by the financial side of running a business. Abby explains that “there’s a real lack of financial literacy, because it’s not something we’re taught in school. As a result, many talented business owners lack confidence when managing their money.”

Her Accountants was designed to change that, a space where finance feels approachable, educational, and even empowering.

Finance with Confidence

From the very beginning, Abby and Lucy knew they wanted Her Accountants to focus on female entrepreneurs. Having both experienced moments of hesitation in what can feel like a male-dominated industry, they understood firsthand the barriers women can face when it comes to money and confidence.

“We wanted to create a space that’s approachable, empowering, and completely free of judgment, a place where women feel comfortable talking about their finances, confident in making decisions, and supported in growing their businesses sustainably,” Abby says.

Her approach centres around communication and connection. “It’s all about relationship building,” she explains. “When a client feels comfortable chatting with us, we can really get to know them, and from there, teach them the areas of finance, accountancy, and tax that they genuinely want to understand.”

Recognising that everyone learns differently, Abby and Lucy tailor their approach to each client, whether through face-to-face chats, detailed explanations, or practical demonstrations. It’s this personal touch that makes finance not just approachable, but sometimes even enjoyable.

Money, Mindset & Growth

Abby believes that confidence with money starts with changing the way you think about it. “The biggest mindset shift we encourage is to stop seeing finances as something separate from your business,” she says. “Your numbers tell the story of your business, what’s working, and at times, what’s not. You don’t have to be an accountant to be financially confident; you just need to be curious and open to learning.”

And her most practical piece of advice? “Get a great accountant to help. You don’t have to do it all yourself, asking for support is empowering.”

When it comes to common pitfalls, Abby says one of the biggest mistakes small businesses make is waiting too long to get organised. “Leaving things until the last minute, whether that’s bookkeeping, tax returns, or receipts, only leads to stress and missed opportunities,” she explains. Another? Not paying yourself properly. “So many people prioritise everyone else before themselves, which affects both mindset and cash flow. We encourage our clients to build a sustainable structure that rewards them for their hard work.”

For Abby, financial strategy is the bridge between goals and growth. “It’s about asking: Where am I now? Where do I want to be? And how do I use my numbers to get there?” she says. By understanding your income, outgoings, and margins, and reviewing them regularly, business owners can make informed, confident decisions that support their vision.

Building Sustainable Success

Abby’s biggest tip for creating a profitable, sustainable business is simple: “Start as you mean to go on, with clarity and structure.” That means setting up good systems early, keeping business and personal finances separate, and seeking professional advice before things get messy. “It’s much easier to build strong foundations than to fix things later. And most importantly, stay consistent – small, steady steps always beat sporadic leaps.”

She’s equally passionate about helping women understand their numbers. “You can’t plan for sustainable growth if you’re not clear on your margins, costs, and cash flow,” she says. “When you know your numbers, you’re not just reacting, you’re leading your business with confidence and intention.”

Advice for Women Starting Out

Abby’s message to women at the beginning of their business journey is full of honesty and encouragement. “Don’t wait until you feel ready,” she says. “None of us ever truly feel ready, and that’s okay. Start where you are, with what you have, and allow yourself to learn as you go. Mistakes will happen, they’re often your greatest teachers.”

She also emphasises the importance of community: “Surround yourself with people who lift you up, challenge you, and bring out the best in you. Mentors, peers, or a supportive community can make all the difference.”

And above all, Abby reminds women that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness. “Asking for help and getting the right support early on is one of the smartest business decisions you can make,” she says. “Having the right team frees up your energy to focus on what you do best, growing your business and making an impact.”

What’s Next for Her Accountants

Looking ahead, Abby and Lucy are focused on expanding their mission to empower even more women through financial education. “We’re launching more workshops, online resources, and community events to help women grow their businesses confidently,” Abby shares. “We’d also love to get involved in more networking opportunities that bring like-minded women together. Our goal is to make finance and strategy approachable for all women in business while helping them achieve sustainable, profitable growth.”

Beyond the Numbers

At Beau Co, we believe confidence is built through understanding, and Abby’s work with Her Accountants embodies that beautifully. By making finance accessible and approachable, she’s helping women turn uncertainty into strategy and ambition into action.

Her message is simple but powerful: when women feel confident with money, they gain more than financial freedom – they gain the ability to shape their future on their own terms.
